Are you new to Sushi? Check Out Pho V’s Beginner Guide!

If you’re new to sushi or haven’t had the opportunity to have sushi much in your life, you may be confused about how to approach ordering sushi and even eating it.

First things first, there is absolutely no wrong way to eat sushi. When you visit Pho V Noodle House and Sushi, feel free to dip in whatever sauces you want and order what sounds interesting!

But if you’re curious about the traditions related to sushi, or even how you should eat sushi, you are in the right place. We’ll help through the basics, and even sushi connoisseurs may learn a thing or two.

The Art of Eating Sushi

Naturally, all sushi restaurants are different. However, there are a few unwritten rules of sushi cuisine every sushi chef knows.

Most people will choose to eat their sushi with chopsticks, but eating with your hands is also acceptable. In addition to your sushi roll, your plate will generally have a generous amount of wasabi and pickled ginger.

Wasabi can be compared to horseradish, and it is offered to those who want an extra kick. It’s spicy, but the taste disappears in a few seconds. Pickled ginger is mild and soothing, and works to prepare you for your next dish by clearing the flavors from your last sushi roll away.

How to Eat Sushi the Traditional Way

When you receive your plate of sushi from your waitress or chef, place a small amount of soy sauce on your plate or bowl. Dip your sushi into the soy sauce. If you feel like adding a little extra spice, use your chopsticks to brush wasabi on your roll.

Now eat your sushi! While smaller pieces of sashimi and nigiri should be eaten in one bite, larger rolls (American-style) can be eaten in more than one. Chew your sushi completely, and if you’re drinking sake with your meal, now is a great time to take a sip. To clear your palate, you can eat a piece of pickled ginger between each roll, or even each bite.

The Best Sushi for Beginners

If you’re new to sushi, you’ll likely be eating a classic roll or maki. We recommend maki for beginners, as nigiri is simply slices of raw fish and sashimi includes rice and raw fish. Rolls are much more approachable and are even available with cooked ingredients if you don’t feel like you are ready to eat raw fish.

If you’re not sure what to try when you visit Pho V Noodle House and Sushi, here’s what we recommend for beginners!

  • California Roll – Crab (cooked), avocado and cucumber.

  • Philadelphia Roll – Salmon, avocado, and cream cheese.

  • Spicy Tuna Roll – Tuna and spicy mayo.

  • Spider Roll – Tempura soft-shell crab, avocado and cucumber.
