The Best Sushi to Eat in the Winter

Did you know that harvesting fish is seasonal? It’s true, many fish are best enjoyed seasonally, just like vegetables! Sure, fish are available year-round. But they taste better during specific conditions available during certain times of the year. Different varieties of sushi were once only available seasonally. While all of our fish at Pho V Noodle House and Sushi tastes great year-round, here are the best fish flavors to try this winter.

There are a variety of ways to eat fish in Japanese culture. We’re going to talk about three: Sushi (or Maki) Rolls, Nigiri, and Sashimi, and the best winter fish you can order in each.

Sushi (Maki) Rolls

Maki rolls are pressed rice, vegetables and fish rolled in seaweed. It sounds simple and delicious, right? In the winter, check our menu for these dishes. They’re especially tasty when the cold weather sets in.

Yellowtail (Buri) Rolls

Sometimes called cold-weather yellowtail (kanburi), it’s flavor is sweet and the texture is soft and melt-in-your-mouth. We make these dishes featuring the delightful fish:

  • Yellowtail Roll

Wrapped in a crispy, salty seaweed this yellowtail based roll is a customer favorite. It also contains mild scallions and a bit of wasabi inside for flavor. Enjoy with a bit of soy sauce.

  • Spicy Yellowtail Roll

If you want a little more heat to warm you up on a cold winter’s day, try our Spicy Yellowtail Roll. We make it just the same as our traditional yellowtail roll, with the addition of our special spicy sauce.

Crab Rolls

Because there are so many kinds of crab, it’s a good bet there will always be a type in season on our menu. Our menu has some delicious crab-based options. Here are our favorites:

  • California Roll

You can’t go wrong with this classic. Thanks to Mexico’s long growing season, we have access to creamy avocados year-round. Add some cucumber and shredded crab meat and you’ve got the perfect meal for a blustery winter day.

  • Spider Roll

Winter makes us thank cozy and savory. The spider roll is made up of tempura-fried Soft Shell Crab, vegetables and Masago. You’ll read more about that later! It’s drizzled in savory eel sauce and is perfect for our customers that aren’t into raw sushi.

Nigiri and Sashimi

We offer Nigiri and Sashimi together on our menu. Sashimi is simply slices of very fresh fish served raw. Nigiri refers to slices of raw fish served over shaped vinegared wine.

  • Tuna (Maguro)

This type of tuna reaches its peak flavor in the winter because the fish become so fatty. Magura is rich and buttery in flavor, making it very popular. Japanese refer to this flavor profile as “umami”. Maguro is delicious on its own or, if you prefer, served Nigiri style.

  • Shrimp (Ebi)

Sakura ebi shrimp is best eaten between October and December. Its sweet flavor and tender consistency are enhanced with ginger and wasabi. A few slices of Ebi Sashimi is a perfect complement to any winter meal at Pho V Noodle House and Sushi.
